I Stopped... I Looked... and I Listened
by
Nat D. Ayer
I like to go walking alone, by myself... it's merely for exercise
I wonder around like a mischievous elf, for I always expect a surprise
T'other day I was walking alongside of the hedge
And the hedge was apropos of some trees
I got my surprise as I walked 'long the edge
'Twas a sound wafted my way on the breeze.
So, I stopped!... and I looked!... and I listened!
And I tried to locate this sound
First, I thought it was here... then I thought it was there
A most peculiar sound that I really declare
I had heard it before but I cannot say where
So I thought that this sound must be found
So, I stopped!... and I looked!... and I listened!
The sound seemed to come from the ground
Someone said, 'You!' and someone said 'Don't!'
Someone said, 'Do!' and someone said 'Won't!'
So, I stopped!... and I looked!... and I left!

At the bidding of youth, I selected a wife
And I thought, 'Now my troubles are halved.
I'll wed right away and be settled for life
For I've found my true soul-mate at last.
The first year of bliss was a dream of delight
Ye Gads! but my joy was supreme
'Til after cucumber, at supper, one night
She started to talk in her dream.
So, I stopped!... and I looked!... and I listened!
But the case was unique, you'll allow
I was filled with amazement... I was knocked in a heap
For I had no idea that she talked in her sleep!
But I knew it was best, perfect silence to keep
So I thought I would hear this somehow.
So, I stopped!... and I looked!... and I listened!
And the sweat seemed to stand on my brow
'My own Darling, Joe, I love you!' she said
'I worship you so...' Well as my name is Fred
I stopped!... and I looked!...
Well!!!... I'll leave it to you!
The end
