Intro.

I should point out that I possess only the basic woodworking skills that I picked up from my early teen years at school where, I recall, it took me four years to produce a 4" teapot stand and a small 12" teak bookshelf (which I still have!). I also remember that I spent considerable time retrieving these pieces from the back of the woodwork room where they had been thrown by a far from satisfied woodwork teacher!!! So, all of the toys featured on these pages should be well within the scope of most people.

Project 1.

The first vehicle I made was from the remains of an old, oak chest-o'-drawers I was breaking up. It seemed a shame to simply dump the pieces into a skip so, using what limited hand tools I possessed, I constructed this pick-up truck using the illustration from a bookcover I found on the net. The trickiest part was shaping the one-piece wheel guards and runner boards. The lights were added several weeks later after treating myself to a mini wood-lathe.

Project 2.

Still on the remaining wood from the drawers, I've used a mahogany stain on the roof to represent the canvas covering and a darker wood sandwiched between oak for the bumpers.

Project 4.

This is my second attempt at the 12" pick-up truck, using oak and mahogany, after purchasing the above book. I think it looks much neater than the first one.

Project 5.

After the success of the above pick-up, I felt confident enough to try this 15" oak and mahogany truck. I've been working on it since November but progress has been slow due to the Christmas holiday, a bout of flu and lack of adequate heating in my workshop over the cold spell. Just a couple of little jobs to complete it.
I'd like to build this one again with opening doors and front steering. It will also give me the opportunity to produce a photographic record of each step which I'll include on these pages when completed.
