LIKE A GOOD LITTLE WIFE SHOULD DO

div

A certain young lady I know very well
Has only been married a year
She always remembers her mother's advice
Seems to have found it of use once or twice
Knows how to manage her hubby
She'll never be left on the shelf
She takes all his wages on pay-day
And gives him three-pence a week for himself.

Chorus: Like a good little wife should do,
A wife who is tender and true
She calls him her 'honey'and spends all his money
Like a good little wife should do.

Whenever he says he's got business in Town
That might keep him out rather late
She never objects in the slightest, but she
Says, 'Very well, but you'll have to take me.'
And to make sure that her husband,
No secret is trying to keep
She carefully goes through his pockets at night
While he is in bed and asleep

Chorus: Like a good little wife should do,
A wife who is tender and true
She makes him sift cinders and clean all the winders
Like a good little wife should do.

She knows that the trials of marriage are such
That she must be always prepared
And so she has always a beautiful snub
Whever hubby is late from the club
And when the fight's fairly started
She pelts him with kettles and boots
Then, if she can manage to get a good hold
She pulls out his hair by the roots.

Chorus: Like a good little wife should do,
A wife who is tender and true
She makes him peal onions and shave off her bunions
Like a good little wife should do.

They'd one vacant room in the house where they live
So they took in a lodger one day
To make him at home was their duty, you know
That's why the landlady humours him so
Has him to tea in the parlour
He's awfully lonely poor chap
They said he should have 'all the comforts of home'
And that's why she sits on his lap.

Chorus: Like a good little wife should do,
A wife who is tender and true
He calls her his 'Rosie', she makes him feel cosy
Like a good little wife should do.

Although we may joke of the good little wife
There's none like her when she is true
The noblest of men have declared that their lives
Were made successful through having good wives
See her when want or affliction
Has put all her love to the test
And though they be ragged and starving she thinks
Her husband and children the best.

Chorus: Like a good little wife should do,
A wife who is tender and true
She'll fondly adore them, yes! give her life for them
Like a good little wife should do.
