OLIVER CROMWELL

You've read your Newgate Calendar and English History
But all the famous men that lived take off their hats to me
I had a lovely chance to be a Company Director
But I was more ambitious, and became the 'Great Protector'.

Chorus: I'm Oliver Cromwell of great notorietee
I was knocking about this earth in sixteen forty three
They haven't got my statue in the House of Lords, I s'pose
But I'm on show at a shilling a time, round at Madam Tussauds.

My soldiers they were stalwart ones, not built for feather beds
They wore the tea-trays on the chest, and saucepans on their heads
And when I got to Parliament, I soon upset the parley
Upset the peers, upset the beers, and also upset Charlie.

Chorus: I'm Oliver Cromwell of great notorietee
I was knocking about this earth in sixteen forty three
They haven't got my statue in the House of Lords, I s'pose
But I'm on show at a shilling a time, round at Madam Tussauds.
