WHAT DOES A SOLDIER CARE?

div

When you get your paper and you go and join the army
Oh, the plains of Aldershot drive a fellow balmy
First night under canvas there you can't get any rest
You find half an army corps sleeping on your chest

Chorus: But what does a soldier care when the bugles all blare
At early dawning on a frosty morning
You're out on manoeuvres there stuck in the mud somewhere
Breakfast time the new recruit, finds his pat of butter scoot
It's under the heel of someone's boot
What does the soldier care?
But on parade hear Sergeant shout
To Bill Brown who's extra stout
'You're sticking your rations too far out'
What does the soldier care?

Bill Jones has an aching jaw, doctor smart and cutey
Does him number nine, sends him back to duty
And next day a dentist chap will pull out half his teeth
'Nice old thing for me' says Bill, no more bully beef

Chorus: But what does a soldier care when the bugles all blare
At early dawning on a frosty morning
You're out on manoeuvres there stuck in the mud somewhere
'I know my teeth are bad,' say Bill
Thought the Germans I'd to kill
Didn't know I had to eat them, still
What does a soldier care'
But at the butts you make your bow
You can't shoot for nuts somehow
You miss every bull and kill one cow
What does a soldier care?

Sunday after church parade the life seems very cosy
You meet somewhere in the park Fluffy little Rosie
Evening time is kissing time; the girls all know it too
Rosie, hoping for the beat, snuggles close to you.

Chorus: But what does a soldier care when the bugles all blare
At early dawning on a frosty morning
You're out on manoeuvres there stuck in the mud somewhere

When you flirt with saucy Rose,
Rosie tingles head to toes
You kiss all the powder off her nose
What does the soldier care?
But one dark night, oh! What a life
You hug someone, then there's strife
You find that you've kissed the Colonel's wife
What does the soldier care?
