YOU FANCY YOURSELVES, DO YOU!

Kate Harvey

Experience has taught me to say of the men,
You fancy yourselves, you do!
You strut like an old rooster mashing a hen,
You fancy yourselves, you do!
You put on a suit for which you've never paid,
You tone yourself up with a small lemonade,
And then on the poor ladies hearts make a raid,
You fancy yourselves, you do!

Chorus: You lay your snares, put on airs,
Try to look 'immensikoff';
Smile like this, go 'kiss-kiss';
And then you give a gentle little cough (ahem!)
The girls you treat say, 'Sweet! sweet!'
And think you are a heavy toff;
But when you've won their little hearts, you trot right off.

When you see a married man out for the night,
He fancies himself, he does!
He tries hard to keep his bald head out of sight,
Oh! he fancies himself, he does!
He thinks he looks young with his deep-dyed moustache,
He winks at the tots and he rattles his cash;
But his wife comes along, she soon settles his hash,
Though he fancies himself, he does!

Chorus:

You think that a girl all your nonsence believes,
You fancy yourselves, you do!
We listen to you but we laugh up our sleeves,
For we fancy ourselves, we do!
We may say we love you and kiss you as proof,
That's all bogey business, a sweet game of 'spoof',
Why, bless you! we love you, dear boys, for your 'oof',
Though you fancy yourselves, you do!

Chorus

You hang round stage doors, oh, you gay mashing dogs!
You fancy yourselves, you do!
Send in little notes to Miss Tottie Short-togs,
You fancy yourselves, you do!
You ask her to supper, you're artful, you're bold,
She answers you, 'Yes.' but your love soon grows cold,
When you see the paint off, she looks fifty years old,
Oh! you fancy yourselves, you do!

Chorus: You lay your snares, put on airs,
Try to look 'immensikoff';
Smile like this, go 'kiss-kiss';
And then you give a gentle little cough (ahem!)
The girls you treat say, 'Sweet! sweet!'
And think you are a heavy toff;
But when you see the old girl's face, you trot right off.
