God's Garden ???

Postby Saronie » May 30th, 2012, 3:14 pm

I am looking for a monologue about a chap who takes over a derelict garden, making such a good job it is admired by everyone who sees it. One day a Vicar sees it and says (something like this) to the man "Isn't it wonderful what God and man can do together" to which the man replies, "You should have seen it when He had it on his own!!!"

Although I recognise the story, I don't think I've ever seen it in either verse or prose form. I've checked for 'God's Garden' but can't find anything under that particular title. I now have several thousand recitations and monologues, too many to browse through so any chance you could be more precise with the title or possibly an author.
In the meantime... can anybody else help with this one?

Help with what one? Ah, now I see what you mean. Help with God's Garden. I think this is a prose monologue, and outside my field.

Remember this one from way back. Bernard Miles is the first name that comes to mind, but I can't find it on his youtube or anywhere in his links. Maybe it wasn't him, but someone else of that style and vintage.

That's it!!! As soon as I saw Bernard Miles, I remembered where I knew it from... it's part of his 'Billie and Toggie' monologue.

Arr, an' that garden wasn't 'alf in a pickle. Well it 'adn't been lived in for nigh on eight years, you know; there was thistles five foot 'igh!
But 'e mastered it, 'e got that so's you wouldn't a knowed it.
You wouldn't a knowed it I tell ya. Taters, cauliflowers, cabbages, lettuces, geraniums - you wouldn't a knowed it I tell ya!
The ole vicar come walkin' by one day and sticks 'is ead over the wall.
'E says "Arr Willie," 'e says, "Its wonderful what God can do in a garden, with a little help, ain't it?"
And ole Willie says "Arr, but you should 'a' seen it when 'e ad it to isself."
Always 'ad a answer, you know.
