I'll introduce you to my chum Josiah Jones Esquire A prophet and a mesmerist yet neither saint nor liar For no matter what he prophesies, it's certain to come true Last week said he 'I prophesy your landlord waits on you.' Chorus: So he did, so he did, but I didn't think he would For I knew the man was ill and therefore didn't think he could But when I got home to my surprise, My landlord gave me two black eyes Jones said he would, and swore he could, and hang it! so he did. One night to see a drama play my chum and I both went And he, with a bit of devilry was on enjoyment bent For in the midst of some great scene said Jones, quite calm and cool 'I'll mesmerise that actor, and will make him look a fool.' Chorus: So he did, so he did, but I didn't think he would For I knew the actor well and therefore didn't think he could But before a sentence I could speak, the actor he began to squeak Jones said he would, and swore he could, and hang it! so he did. Last week my old chum prophesied our ceiling would fall in And that our cat would fight each night on top of our dustbin Then prophesied my neighbour Brown my feelings much would hurt And that our parson that same week would go and pawn his shirt. Chorus: So he did, so he did, but I didn't think he would For I knew our parson's modesty and didn't think he could But sure enough last Tuesday morn our parson put his shirt in pawn Jones said he would, and swore he could, and hang it! so he did. Once Jones and I had words about a girl whose name was 'Fan' Said I to Jones, 'You're fairly done, for I'm the accepted man.' But said, ' Johnny Jones you love the girl but I'll make you sip sorrow For I'll let you know sir, for your cheek I'll marry the girl tomorrow.' Chorus: So he did, so he did, but I didn't think he would For I knew the girl loved me and therefore didn't think he could But in spite of love 'tis strange to say he made her marry him next day He said he would, and swore he could, and hang it! so he did. |
